The group’s full animatic.
My part of the animatic.
I’m quite disappointed to say that I think I didn’t learn as much as I could have and I think that’s mainly due to me sticking to my comfort zone and using After Effects and Photoshop. The part of the animatic I did was the last part and like I’ve said, this was all drawn in Photoshop and animated in After Effects. I drew up almost every part on a separate layer, scenes like the full aerial shot of the village shot after the crash was drawn on multiple layers as each part was separate. I drew out like this so that I could easily animate round it if I decided to change anything when in after effects and this did help. One part I notice this straight away with is the first scene with the “Dogman” driving up over the hill, he drives in front of the back mound whereas if I had this whole scene on one layer he would be behind it and well, that would look wrong. I also did a few parts in separate compositions and then added these in afterwards to the animatic so they could be repeated. Clear examples of these are the roads when the characters are driving, I drew the road and then the surface on a separate layer and then a new surface on another layer and did this for 6 layers so I could then put each one after another to make it look like the road is moving. The main thing I learnt was how to properly approach a project like this but unfortunately I feel my group didn’t quite achieve this. The first mistake we made was not deciding on one artistic theme to be used throughout, we stuck to our own designs for most of the project. Towards the end, about 3 weeks before the hand in date, we tried to compromise on some form of a theme to be used like the colour scheme and setting designs but each of these were drawn in our own styles so they still all looked different. The other thing was there was a lack of communication between the group, we set up a dropbox which was good because whenever we finished a bit of work we did put it straight on there so we were all able to access it quickly but then we would only discuss ideas during each class even though we added each other on facebook and skype, we never made use of it. Overall, I think this project could’ve been done a lot more efficiently and effectively but I feel we managed to get a fairly decent overall animatic. I’m going to put this project down to a learning experience as I feel I now know how to tackle a project like this in the future, I felt the group made a few good decisions and am certain me and the group won’t make the mistakes we did in this project.
ANT - Enter with a fade from black showing a desolate field with corpses everywhere (have 2 or 3 more shots of the camera panning round the field at different angles). Cut to a shot with bodies close up to the camera and in the distance, a shadowy figure is climing onto a motorbike (slowly zoom in on him). Cut to an aerial 3/4 perspective of the road with Axl on his bike. The camera pans up to his face and then zooms in to show the fine detail (hold this shot for two or three seconds) *Also start playing the song - Gualagara’s The White Condor* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1knkis2H2U. Then cut to low perspective shot of the road, Axl enters right again as we watch him drive into the distance.
OZI - Cut back to the field to show a pile of dead bodies. They begin to rumble and then a fist pushes out from them. Then the upper half of the evil driver’s body appears. Now repeat the same shot of a shadowy figure getting on to a bike (slowly zooming in). Aerial view of the road Axl is driving down, showing all of the sharp turns and twists that he just manages to drive round. Cut to a front view shot of Axl as he looks down at his monitor. Show whole monitor with the timer “00.09.59” flashing red with a map underneath it (like a satnav). Cut to a shot of Axl’s face as he looks over his shoulder to see the other rider, he then frowns as he faces the camera(anger, worried, you choose). Cut to Axl’s right hand as he forces down the accelarator. Side view of the bike as it accelerates off screen. Cut to a perspective view from behind Axl as we see him drive off screen very quickly. Cut back to the other rider as he does the same (repeat the panels of Axl speeding up and driving faster).
KAMIL -Quick aerial shot of Axl as he cuts off from the main road onto a faded dirt road. Landscape shot of the village “Vajrayana” as Axl drives towards it. The biker enters shot once Axl drives off screen. Cut to a shot of Axl’s face as he is in deep thought with the other rider lurking behind him, here have the music quiet down to a background echo with the background going into slow motion. Cut to a front view of a church (everything is quiet). Then the doors open and we hear people coming out of the church cheering and being happy. Just as everyone steps down onto the ground Axl enters the shot from the right (cut to a new shot when Axl is in the middle of the screen). Front view of Axl on his bike which is inches away from the bride and groom (just narrowly missing them).
SEAN - Cut back to reality showing Axl as he narrowly avoids everyone (Come back in slow motion and then speed up). The other biker then tries to skid out of the way but drives into the church and then his bike bursts into flames killing him. Then cut to a back shot, showing Axl driving off into the distance, with the wedding guests to the right of the screen looking shocked. Cut to a perspective shot of Axl again, as he’s driving away from the village with a huge smoke cloud in the background. As he is driving along a shadow covers the road and him. Cut to his glasses/helmet visor and show a reflection of the city and cruiser appear. Then cut to another landscape shot, showing the city rising up above the horizon as Axl drives towards it.
The first three images are the final designs of the city, church and village used in the animatic. The other images are some screenshots of how I made the animatic in After effects. The first two are examples of how I made use of the 3D space in after effects and was able to layer things on top of each other. The next two show how I made separate parts in separate compositions and then used these compositions in the main animatic and the last two was how I made the moving background seen when Axl was driving towards the city. I did notice when I did this that the two images weren’t perfectly lined up but I felt it was ok to leave it as it was because the whole thing was moving rather quickly and when I watched it back I couldn’t notice it.
These 3 photos are final designs I came up with for the city and the church. These will both be used in the final animatic and Kamil will design the church in his like the one I have done. The last image of that dome structure was intended to be a house design but then I decided to incorporate it into the design of the giant factory in the village scenes.
This is an “extremely” rough animatic done in premiere pro in about 2 hours. I did this just to see if the story flows and makes sense which I feel it does but we still have to change some of the building designs to show the planet isn’t earth but overall I was kind of pleased with this and I’m sure the final animatic will be a lot better than this.
These are the character designs after looking up for reference images.
These sketches were done before looking up images for references.
I felt like trying to give the character “Axl” a biker look to but also needed to achieve a military look to it. When I was designing Axl, Ron Perlman kept on coming to mind as he has that tough guy authoritative look to him. I found when I was drawing as well I kept giving the character an extremely over exaggerated chin similar to the army generals found in looney tunes and ren and stimpy to give that authoritative look to him and then was also giving him a shaggy beard and moustache combo for that biker look.
